Three Design Benefits of Window Cornices

Window cornices have a long history in interior design and date back to ancient Italy. The word means ledgewhich is an apropos way to describe a cornice, a decorative horizontal molding used over doors and windows to add aesthetic appeal and dimension.

At Enhancement Window Design, we are proud to carry a wide selection of wood and fabric cornices that will help you camouflage any unsightly window treatment mechanisms, add some extra character to your home, and let you further coordinate your windows with your furnishings and the rest of your décor.

Use a Cornice to Camouflage

Many window treatments can have unattractive hardware and other associated mechanical systems. While the window treatment adds a beautiful statement to your home, the operating mechanisms are an unsightly distraction.

Window cornices are the perfect way to hide the hardware, replacing an otherwise unsightly system with an aesthetic unifying look that will make your windows and window treatments the focal point of your room.

Add Character with a Cornice

There is no doubt that window cornices add a great deal of character to a room. Cornices can be from any design era, depending on your taste and existing home design. An ornately sculpted wood cornice can add a Victorian feel, while a cornice with sleek, modern lines offers a mid-century modern appeal. A cornice with interesting repetitive lines, curves, and shapes will make your windows come alive with an art nouveau flair, and the list goes on and on with all kinds of possible fashions.

Try a Cornice for Coordination

Cornices are an excellent way to coordinate your furnishings and décor with your windows.

Wood cornices add depth and design because of their natural grains and architectural carving. Select a wood stain that complements your furniture or a pattern that echoes a shape in one of your décor pieces.

You can also paint your wood cornices with accenting colors or have them gilded for a rich, stately look and luxurious accent.

Fabric cornices allow you to select fabrics that match or complement your furniture or accessories. Match a cornice fabric to an upholstered armchair or chaise lounge, or even mix it up entirely and choose fabrics that contrast in exciting ways.

You could even select a deeply textured fabric to add a third dimension to your windows.
